When brilliant, eccentric scientist Seth Brundle makes a huge technological breakthrough in teleportation, he decides to test it on himself. Unbeknownst to him, a common housefly manages to get inside the device and the two become one.
Cronenberg turns intimacy into agony, staging a slow decay you feel in your own skin. The horror here is patient and physiological, each scene documenting the body betraying its owner in wet, meticulous detail. What unsettles most is the tenderness underneath — you watch someone you care about dissolve, and you cannot look away.
