When larcenous real estate clerk Marion Crane goes on the lam with a wad of cash and hopes of starting a new life, she ends up at the notorious Bates Motel, where manager Norman Bates cares for his housebound mother.
Hitchcock works on your nerves with patience rather than shock, letting an ordinary detour curdle into something wrong. The dread here is intimate and voyeuristic, built on quiet rooms, watchful eyes, and a rising suspicion that the ground beneath the story is unstable. It disturbs long after the tension breaks.
