A young woman left her family for an unspecified reason. The husband determines to find out the truth and starts following his wife. At first, he suspects that a man is involved. But gradually, he finds out more and more strange behaviors and bizarre incidents that indicate something more than a possessed love affair.
Possession detonates the intimacy of a failing marriage into something feral and physiological. Żuławski keeps you in a state of escalating hysteria, where grief, obsession, and the body itself begin to warp. Adjani's descent is difficult to watch and impossible to unsee. The dread here is emotional and biological at once, wet and airless.
