Sue Ann is a loner who keeps to herself in her quiet Ohio town. One day, she is asked by Maggie, a new teenager in town, to buy some booze for her and her friends, and Sue Ann sees the chance to make some unsuspecting, if younger, friends of her own.
Ma trades on the slow rot of a smile held too long. Octavia Spencer turns warmth into a weapon, and the film feeds on that queasy tension between welcome and threat. What starts as easy adolescent fun curdles into something possessive, watchful, and inescapable. The dread here is social — the fear of a kindness you can't refuse.
