The living dead have taken over the world, and the remaining humans live in a walled city to protect themselves as they cope with the situation.
Romero's return to the apocalypse trades cheap shocks for slow, grinding dread. This is decay as an atmosphere: a fortified city rotting from the inside while the dead outside grow patient and purposeful. The horror creeps up on you through class rot and gore, leaving a bleak residue that outlasts the runtime.
