A British estate agent travels to Transylvania to meet the mysterious Count Dracula, who is interested in leasing a London castle. After Dracula enslaves the agent and drives him to insanity, the pair return to London together, where Dracula, a secret bloodsucker, begins preying on socialites.
A slow, cobwebbed hypnosis rather than a shock. The dread here is atmospheric and total — silence where a score should be, candlelight swallowed by shadow, and a predator who moves through drawing rooms as easily as crypts. Lugosi's stillness does the work, unsettling you through composure rather than violence.
